Holy Week at the KBI

At the Kino Border Initiative, Holy Week, the highlight of the Church year, is observed with various activities, both celebratory and humble. In many ways, Holy Week at the KBI is like any other. Two meals are served every day; the shelter is in full operation; migrants can receive medical attention for injuries; and the advocacy work on behalf of individuals, families and all who are displaced and seeking reunion with friends and family continues uninterrupted. But a mindfulness of the …Read More

Pope Francis in Mexico

The Pontiff’s visit to Mexico last month drew worldwide attention to major issues in that country—drug violence, economic justice, indigenous rights, and immigration. A Gathering of Support for the KBI

Sunshine and warmth marked the Sixth Annual Kino Border Initiative Dinner, a yearly event that recognizes the important mission of the KBI and helps to fund it. Both the weather and spirits were radiant on Saturday, February 20, as dinner guests arrived at the courtyard of St. Francis Xavier School in Phoenix for the KBI’s Sixth Annual Dinner. The yearly event is a cornerstone of the KBI’s fundraising efforts, and provides an occasion for supporters to come together to acknowledge the …Read More

Up Close: The People of the KBI

Walking in Mercy Youth Summit  In response to Pope Francis’s Jubilee Year of Mercy, the KBI and the Kino Teens brought together students from four southern Arizona high schools for a Walking in Mercy Youth Summit. On that Saturday afternoon in early February, Bishop Gerald Kicanas greeted the 25 participants and introduced the summit’s focus—journeying with migrants—followed by opening prayers led by the students. For the rest of the afternoon, the students (all of whom have visited the …Read More

Immigration in the News

In addition to the coverage of Pope Francis’s widely heralded trip to Mexico listed in our earlier article, here is the latest news about border issues, immigration policy, and immigrant rights from various sources. From The New York Times Magazine (3/3/16, in English and Spanish), a detailed description of the tragic 2012 murder of 16-year-old José Antonio Elena Rodríguez by a U.S. Border Patrol agent from across the border fence, its implications and its aftermath, including statements …Read More
