Supreme Court Upholds Indefinite Detention

The Supreme Court reversed a decision by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals to grant bond hearings to detained individuals every six months, allowing instead for indefinite detention—an average of 13 months, but for some, years—without the prospect of release to more easily prepare a case and reunite with family. In February, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down a 5-3 ruling that detained immigrants facing deportation do not have a right to periodic bond hearings to determine if they are … [Read more...]

María’s Story: After Detention, the Road to Asylum

María fled her native Guatemala, seeking asylum in the U.S. Her journey included 8 harrowing months in detention, a crucial 6-month bond hearing, and release upon raising her $9,000 bond with the help of the community. In the shadow of the traumas she’s experienced and with her asylum case pending, María looks ahead with hope. Support the KBI’s Legal Fellow and Other Programs

This month marks an important time in the KBI fundraising year, between the Annual KBI Phoenix Dinner on March 3 and Arizona Gives Day on April 3 and coinciding with the season of Lent. The work we do every day—our direct aid, education programs, advocacy efforts, and more recently and critically, our expansion into legal support—relies on these calls for donations, and is made possible through your generosity and enduring commitment to our mission of accompanying our migrant brothers and … [Read more...]
