Las Posadas, (which means, “The Inns”), is a religious festival celebrated in Mexico and various Latin American countries. Families dress up as Joseph and Mary to reenact the Holy Family’s journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of a safe place to give birth to their son, Jesus.
This Posada season takes on a very different tone for people seeking asylum and humanitarian aid groups in Nogales as countless migrants have arrived this year to the U.S.-Mexico border seeking the very refuge that the Holy Family once sought long ago. Although the end of Title 42 is on the horizon, many families have been waiting far too long.
As we stand in solidarity with the many families seeking asylum, we remain steadfast to Pope Francis’s vision to strive towards an ever wider “we”. He reminds us in His message on World Day of Migrants and Refugees (2022), “No one must be excluded. God’s plan is essentially inclusive and gives priority to those living on the existential peripheries. Among them are many migrants and refugees, displaced persons, and victims of trafficking. The Kingdom of God is to be built with them, for without them it would not be the Kingdom that God wants. The inclusion of those most vulnerable is the necessary condition for full citizenship in God’s Kingdom.”
Join us in supporting families seeking asylum in taking action to demand the full restoration of asylum protections.
