Comadres: Co-mothering and Communal Care at the Shelter

Comadre (noun): a close friend, a co-mother Many migrant mothers are single mothers not by choice. Partners fall victims to violence inflicted by organized crime, leaving the women widowed and the children without a father. Other times, the partners abandon their families to migrate to the United States to provide for them. Sometimes partners simply leave because they choose to. Meet the Kino Teens Who Embody the Heritage of Padre Kino- Both at the Border and Beyond

The Kino Border Initiative has one noble, overarching mission: “To promote US/Mexico border and immigration policies that affirm the dignity of the human person and a spirit of bi-national solidarity.” Last month we ventured through the origins and history of KBI, how the humble kindness of members and organizations within the Tucson community flourished into the established organization that KBI is now known as. Alma’s “Bolsas de dignidad” or “Dignity Bags” is one example of this.  When Alma Schlor met a migrant woman named Dominga …Read More

“Así como la Sagrada Familia estaba buscando posada, igual queremos posada.” “Just like the Holy Family searched for refuge, we want refuge as well.”

On Saturday, December 18th, 2021, also known as International Day of the Migrant, Bishop Edward Joseph Weisenburger of Tucson accompanied migrant families in Nogales who peacefully reenacted the Holy Family’s journey to seek refuge. Asylum seekers waiting in Nogales, accompanied by dozens of faith leaders and advocates, walked in procession from the downtown port of entry to the Kino Border Initiative while praying, singing, sharing testimonies and inviting public officials to take action to …Read More
