This month, we welcomed Br. Ricardo Greeley Cornejo as our Mexican Operations Coordinator. We also include a report-back from the Missionary Sisters’ of the Eucharist annual holiday gathering to fortify their work. Additionally, we hosted one immersion group and look forward to welcoming you to the grand opening of the migrant aid center next month!
1) Br. Ricardo begins as Operations Coordinator: Br. Ricardo Greeley Cornejo joined the KBI team in late December, where he will be working as Operations Coordinator. Br. Ricardo took his vows as a Jesuit brother in 1990, and since then has predominately worked in indigenous communities in Chiapas, Veracruz, and Tabasco. He also spent six years accompanying migrant farmworkers in North Carolina. Much of Ricardo’s work has focused on permaculture, farming, fair trade, and community organizing around labor rights and human rights. Ricardo grew up in a bilingual, bicultural household between Guadalajara, Mexico, and San Diego, CA, spending three years in one place before returning to the other. He was called to serve in Nogales and at KBI because of the need that currently exists on the border, and his experience, perspective, and ministry are a gift to migrants, volunteers, and the KBI team. Bienvenido, Ricardo!
2) Missionary Sisters of the Eucharist annual gathering: At the end of December, the three Missionary Sisters of the Eucharist who are part of the KBI staff—Sr. Pina, Sr. Engracia, and Sr. Cecilia—attended their annual congregational meeting in Colima, Mexico. All of the sisters of the order attended, and four of the five days were spent in time of self- and shared reflections on individual strengths, gifts, and limitations. They also shared what necessities exist in each community, both materially and spiritually. The fifth day was spent in celebration, prayer, and gratitude. The sisters enjoyed much-deserved time away and are once again back doing educational, humanitarian, and logistical work in Nogales upon their return!
3) Immersion groups:
We hosted one immersion group this December, a group of high school students and their teachers from Brophy College Preparatory in Phoenix. There are many visiting groups in January—look forward to updates on which schools visited in next month’s newsletter!

4) Updates on Migrant Center grand opening: We continue to make progress on the new migrant aid center, and look forward to welcoming our supporters, friends, partners, and media to the grand opening and blessing of the new building on Wednesday, February 12, at noon.
