Florence Project and Kino Border Initiative Condemn the Biden Administration’s Expansion of Title 42 and Other Anti-Immigrant Policies.
We joined with the Florence Project and other Catholic organizations to express our deep disappointment in the Biden Administration’s plans to continue to dismantle the U.S. asylum system by expanding Title 42 and resurrecting a version of illegal and inhumane Trump-era transit bans.
The Biden administration has consistently adopted practices that privilege some people seeking safety over others based on factors like nationality, existing ties to the U.S., and wealth. The right to seek asylum must be available to everyone, regardless of such factors. While this plan may very well lead to lower numbers of migrants crossing the border, it will also certainly leave people fleeing persecution with no option to seek protection for themselves and their families.
Faith-based groups on border unfazed by lawmakers’ call to investigate them.
In response to four Republican congressmen’s accusations that Catholic Charities USA violates federal law by providing food, clothing and shelter to migrants, Director of Education and Advocacy, Pedro De Velasco, spoke to Religion News Service.
“There’s a need, because the U.S. government is not upholding the international and domestic laws of people accessingasylum. People are stranded. They’re stuck in Nogales and all across the border…Christ is truly present in the migrants that are stranded on the other side of the border, begging us to open the doors to him,” he said.
Bishop Seitz Accompanies President Biden to the Border.
“We urge the [Biden] Administration to reverse its present course in favor of humane solutions that recognize the God-given dignity of migrants and provide equitable access to immigration and humanitarian pathways.” – Bishop Mark Seitz
Bishop Mark Seitz of the Diocese of El Paso was one of just four people present on the tarmac to welcome President Biden to El Paso January 8th as he began his brief tour of the U.S.-Mexico border. Then, he accompanied the President in a car ride to the border, conversing with him along the way. “Bishop Seitz said he maintains hope that something might come of Mr. Biden’s visit to the border.” We echo that hope and stand in solidarity with the many migrants who suffer the consequences of unjust policy every day.
