“The most important thing in the world is my dau “The most important thing in the world is my daughters,” said a mother who fled after organized crime threatened them.

For years, women and families have been a growing demographic of #migrants and #asylum seekers. Brutal gender-based violence is one key factor behind this change. An astounding 87% of women and girls at Kino reported domestic abuse, threats, sexual assault, rape, and kidnappings.

Ana María is just one of them. A mother of four from Guerrero, she shared with #KBI staff that a group of men attempted to kidnap her two daughters. While she was waiting for a doctor’s appointment, they pulled up in a car, got out and tried to pull her 16-year-old and 12-year-old daughters into the vehicle. Ana Maria and her daughters were able to get away, but since that time she has lived with the fear that her daughters would be kidnapped if she stayed in her hometown.

As any mother would, she did what she thought would keep her children safe. She fled.

Women and girls like Ana María deserve the chance to live in safety. They deserve the chance to migrate with dignity. #MigrationwithDignity

“My Moment Has Come.”🙏 Today we are offerin “My Moment Has Come.”🙏 Today we are offering you an inside look at a conversation we had with Eva, a woman who migrated to Nogales to seek asylum with her son. It all started when she met an angel.

When she was turned away at the border under #Title42, she became a member of the Revolucionarios, helping to mobilize migrants in Nogales. After nine months, she was able to begin the #asylum process.
In 2022, 🔴75%🔴 of the people who arrived in In 2022, 🔴75%🔴 of the people who arrived in Kino reported that violence or persecution was the main reason for migrating.

Last year we met hundreds of migrants like * Reina * In Venezuela, her husband was murdered. After the threats against her and her son continued, she fled with him to save their lives.

Unfortunately, Reina experienced more violence on her trip. In Mexico, a criminal organization detained her bus and forced all of the passengers off. She and her son were held hostage for 15 days, until Reina's niece in the US could pay the ransom demanded for them.

Once in Nogales, Reina and her son tried to start the asylum process. CBP expelled them twice, putting them in danger of being attacked by the mob once more.

Migrants like Reina have been abandoned by governments and policies. They have fled for their lives, only to find that their paths to safety have been closed.

Governments must:

#1 Provide viable pathways to seeking asylum so that migrants like Reina can exercise their international right to do so.

#2 Hold officers accountable to standing up for migrant rights and ending the abuse of vulnerable migrants like Reina.

#3 Work together to ensure that migrants can live safely in their communities of origin, safeguarding their right NOT to migrate.
