We are still accepting applications for the Director of Finance and Administration position. The Director of Finance and Administration is responsible for overseeing the overall financial management and internal controls, managing all human resource functions, and directing general business operations of the organization in a way that will allow all Kino Border Initiative legal entities in the US and Mexico to effectively fulfill its mission.
Welcoming New Team Members: Gia and Ángel
Our team has been growing, and we are thrilled to welcome two new staff members to the Kino Border Initiative, Gia del Pino and Ángel Román Avilés Ruvalcaba. Respectively, they are joining us as the Director of Communication and Doorman. We are grateful for the unique skills, perspective, and passion that each of them brings to our work here at the border.
Sr. Engracia Published a Book
Our Mexican Education Coordinator Sister Engracia Robles teamed up with one of our volunteers, Tobin Hansen, to assemble a collection of migrant stories as told in their own words. Now, she has the first copies of the resulting book in-hand! You can find Voices of the Border at Georgetown University Press.
From the book description: “Migrants, refugees, and deportees live through harrowing situations, yet their personal stories are often ignored. While politicians and commentators mischaracterize and demonize, herald border crises, and speculate about who people are and how they live, the actual memories of migrants are rarely shared. In the tradition of oral storytelling, Voices of the Border reproduces the stories migrants have told, offering a window onto both individual and shared experiences of crossing the US-Mexico border.”
Jesuit Ordinations
Last month, the Society of Jesus ordained 25 new priests in Canada, the United States, and Haiti. We were especially proud to see Hung Nguyen among them. We had the privilege of living with Hung Nguyen when he spent a full year volunteering with us. The memories we have of him are a treasure to us and we are happy to celebrate this new chapter in his life. We pray that God will bless him in the same way that he already called Hung and has shone through his heart.
Saint Ignatius Day
The feast of St. Ignatius will take place on July 31st! The feast marks the day when St. Ignatius, the founder of the Society of Jesus, died in 1556. This year his feast will carry extra weight as we mark the year of St. Ignatius, continuing his legacy of compassion and finding God in all things. The Society of Jesus has more presence in more places across the globe than any other order, acting as the hands and feet of Jesus to this day.
Fr. Sean Steps into the Provincial
We are celebrating with Fr. Sean Carroll as he prepares to step into the role of Provincial of the USA West Province of the Society of Jesus. As a Provincial, Fr. Sean will oversee all of the members and activities in the Western Province of the USA. He will begin the role on the feast day of St. Ignatius himself, July 31st. Join us in leaving a word of encouragement for Fr. Sean!
Fr. Sean,
Blessings to you as you step into your new role as Provincial. You touched many lives here on the border, including mine. I know you will touch many more in the years to come.
Thanks for the email; your news brings alive the efforts to humanize our migrant policy and policies. As a former Jesuit, I sympathize with Fr. Sean in his new service, and wish him well. Congratulations too to your new director and best wishes for the small successes that will envigorate her efforts.
Thank you for the encouragement!
Fr. Sean,
Blessings on your new leadership role!
May God continue to guide you in your ministry. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to know you and volunteer at KBI, Fr. Sean. Count on my ongoing prayerful support.
