The KBI charts the success of our legal fellow program’s first year, offers an update on our direct aid and temporary shelters for asylum seekers at the port of entry, and shares details about recent immersions. Look for our 2017 annual report, in your postbox or online!
- KBI/Florence Project Legal Fellow: As we mark the one-year anniversary of our legal fellow program, co-sponsored by the Florence Project, we are pleased to share its impact. Since last August, Rocio Castañeda, our legal fellow, answered legal questions from 240 individuals in the comedor; provided 63 in-depth asylum orientations; successfully represented two individuals who qualified for minimum bond ($1500); and supported two individuals (through pro se assistance and referrals) who won their asylum claims. This program has added to the record of comprehensive and strategically strong asylum cases and, in so doing, helped advance immigration law. We also bid farewell to Rocio as she embarks on a new position with the Young Center, an organization providing legal aid and other services to unaccompanied immigrant minors. The KBI is deeply grateful for her work and commitment this past year, and wish her success in her future advocacy and casework. For details about applying for the legal fellow position, please see—and share—the new job listing at: https://firrp-hfvr7nehlhvix.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/KBI-Legal-Fellow_Job-Posting_8-01-18.pdf.
- Temporary Shelters: Over the past several months, the KBI has set up temporary shelters for asylum seekers who have waited as long as two weeks to be admitted at the DeConcini Port of Entry. Currently, those presenting themselves for asylum have had shorter waits or have even been able to enter upon arrival. Nevertheless, the KBI stands ready to meet any needs in this area as they arise, and we thank our dedicated donors who have made offering this off-site aid and accompaniment possible.
- KBI Annual Report: The KBI 2017 annual report will soon be released, and donors can expect to find a printed copy in their mailboxes soon. For a downloadable version, check our website in the coming days: https://www.kinoborderinitiative.org/annual-report/.
