This month we share essays on misguided border policies and practices by the KBI’s Father Sean Carroll, S.J. and KBI supporter and immigration lawyer Christina DeConcini. We also include details about May’s immersion experiences.
- Border Realities: America Magazine published this article focusing on the reality of the migrant experience by KBI Executive Director, Father Sean Carroll, S.J. In it, Father Sean illuminates the critical need for the U.S. to “respond more effectively to the fundamental reasons people migrate while respecting human rights,” and how in so doing, “we will be on the path to renewing our own souls, both individually and as a country.” Read his essay here: https://www.americamagazine.org/politics-society/2018/05/14/trumps-border-wall-ignores-realities-migration.
- Operation Streamline: Immigration lawyer, KBI immersion participant, and member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Washington, D.C., Christina DeConcini reflected on her recent experience observing an Operation Streamline “assembly-line” prosecution in her hometown of Tucson, in the very courthouse that bears her grandfather’s name. (The DeConcini Port of Entry is named for her father.) Drawn from a rich family legacy and years of personally working with migrant clients, DeConcini sets down her thoughts and criticisms of this harsh program designed to prosecute dozens of immigrant defendants at once, without sufficient legal counsel or adequate attention to due process, in this Arizona Republic Op-Ed.: http://arizonarepublic.az.newsmemory.com/publink.php?shareid=0e8a88936.
- Immersion Experiences: University students from different parts of the U.S. joined the KBI for immersions in May:
