This past month, the KBI was awarded a grant for educational programming, and Father Sean Carroll, S.J. received an honorary degree for his work with the KBI. We also share details about KBI presentations and immersion experiences.

  • Valley Leadership Youth Grant: The KBI is honored and grateful to receive a Valley Leadership Youth Grant to support Kino Teens educational programming. Brophy College Preparatory student Tony Mattalino nominated the KBI for the grant, and board member Dora Vasquez represented the KBI at the presentation ceremony in Phoenix, AZ. Thank you, Valley Leadership for your support and for cultivating strong leadership in Arizona!
  • Honorary Degree: At their Commencement Exercises on May 24, the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA awarded an honorary degree to Father Sean Carroll, S.J. for his work with the Kino Border Initiative. The speeches that day focused on inclusivity and the importance of communication and dialogue. Valedictorian Isabel Block, noting the activism and advocacy of her classmates “who are committed to making this school and the world beyond a better place,” went on to say, “The members of this class refuse to be silent, refuse to be bystanders.” From the KBI, congratulations to the Class of 2019!
  • The KBI on the Road: In May, Joanna Williams attended a San Diego meeting organized by the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. She was also a plenary speaker at the Student Leadership Conference of the Jesuit Universities Humanitarian Action Network hosted by the University of Scranton, June 14–16, 2019.
  • Immersion Experiences: Post-grad volunteers from New Mexico and college students from the East Coast joined the KBI for immersions this month.
