KBI May Announcements

This month, Joanna Williams, Director of Education and Advocacy, graduated with a Master’s in Public Policy from Arizona State University’s Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions in their School of Public Affairs.

Our announcements this month include the KBI’s celebration of Easter; recent trips and presentations; and immersion experiences. In addition, the KBI congratulates Joanna Williams on completing her Master’s in Public Policy at Arizona State University.

  • Holy Week: Lent and the week between Palm Sunday and Easter is always a moving time at the KBI. This year, as is KBI tradition, Father Samuel Lozano de los Santos, S.J., Director of Programs–Mexico celebrated the annual Pascual Mass in the comedor with a large assembly of migrant individuals and families in attendance. To all, a happy Easter season and a happy spring!
  • Joanna’s Graduation: Earlier this month, Joanna Williams, KBI Director of Education and Advocacy, graduated from Arizona State University’s School of Public Affairs with a Master’s in Public Policy, and was honored as the 2019 Outstanding Graduate for their Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions. The program builds on the impressive skills and experience Joanna has brought to the KBI, and the perspectives and policy tools she gained through the program will enhance her advocacy work at the KBI. During her program, she worked on an independent study project developing a comprehensive and easily implemented asylum orientation training to provide information to potential asylum seekers in their countries of origin. Learn more about Joanna’s studies and plans in this ASU profile and video: https://asunow.asu.edu/20190505-border-grad-hopes-make-difference-immigration-policy. ¡Felicidades, Joanna!
  • The KBI on the Road: Joanna Williams attended a gathering of the U.S. contingent of the Jesuit Migration Network in El Paso, TX on April 23–25, and presented at the Institute for Catholic Thought and Culture at Seattle University on May 2. Father Sean Carroll, S.J. gave a panel presentation in Matamoros, Tamaulipas on April 9, and spoke at Central Catholic High School in Portland, OR on April 26.
  • Immersion Experiences: April immersion groups included high school students from Arizona, California, and New York as well as participants from a parish in North Carolina.
